Sometimes called “a pacemaker for the brain”, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an implantable device delivers electrical pulses to counteract the irregular signals that result in movement disorder symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and difficulty walking.
When medication has not been effective and or tolerated, this procedure can be a life-changing treatment for people with movement disorders, such as:
DBS can be performed unilaterally (one-sided) or bilaterally (two-sided), depending on whether one or both sides of the body experience symptoms. Overall, the goal of DBS treatment is to provide long-lasting improvement in one’s quality of life while allowing for programming adjustments, as needed, to maintain relief from the progressive symptoms of movement disorders.
Adjustments to the stimulation can be made during office visits and later controlled at home using a handheld remote.
Most models of this device can last many years due to improvements in size, battery performance, and durability. Replacement of the DBS battery is performed, when necessary, as a simple outpatient procedure. These advances have created amazing possibilities for people suffering from movement disorders.
Benefits of DBS
- Significant symptom relief for tremor, stiffness, and slowness of movement
- Adjustable and reversible treatment
- Long-lasting battery life with outpatient replacement
- Improved quality of life and independence
Is DBS Right for You?
DBS may be a great option if you're living with a movement disorder and traditional treatments aren’t working well for you. You might benefit from DBS if:
- Medications aren’t enough: You continue to experience symptoms like tremors, stiffness, or difficulty walking, even while taking prescribed medication.
- Side effects are interfering: Your current medications cause unwanted side effects that impact your quality of life.
- You’re not eligible for MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS): DBS offers an alternative for patients who aren’t candidates for this non-invasive treatment.
- You have strong cognitive health: DBS is most effective for individuals without significant memory or thinking challenges.
Each patient’s journey is unique, and our care team will work closely with you to determine if DBS is the right path forward.
