Performing more than 500 cardiac surgeries each year, the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long Beach Medical Center has specialized care teams and three dedicated operating rooms exclusively for the needs of cardiac patients.
Our surgical suites are equipped with the most advanced technology and are utilized by highly trained surgeons and dedicated surgical teams. Patients may undergo conventional or innovative surgical approaches, like minimally invasive surgery. Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan to maximize outcomes while minimizing pain and recovery periods through a minimally-invasive-first approach.
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery spares healthy tissue, reduces scarring and bleeding, and accelerates recovery time. With this technique, our surgeons perform heart surgery through two- to three-inch incisions in the side of the chest using specialized surgical instruments. Innovative surgical procedures include chronic total occlusion, minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass, off-pump bypass and robotic-assisted surgery.
Hybrid Imaging Suite
Our MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute houses a Hybrid Imaging Suite, which features highly advanced imaging technology, and combines the diagnostic capabilities of a catheterization laboratory with the surgical functions of an operating room. The unique combination of features allows our care team to easily switch from a catheterization lab to an operating room during procedures that may need highly specialized care. The advanced imaging, including 3D reconstruction, assists in timely diagnosis and expedites treatment.
Complex Cardiovascular Surgeries
With our dedicated multi-disciplinary team and advanced technology, we are able to offer complex cardiovascular surgeries, including:
- Valve-preserving aortic root replacement (David and Yacoub operations)
- Mini-sternotomy for ascending/aortic root and aortic arch operations
- Thoracic endovascular repair for complex type B aortic dissection
- Stent grafting of ascending aorta using first FDA-approved device
- Open repair of descending and transverse aortic arch
- Hybrid and branched stent grafts for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms
- Minimally invasive atrial fibrillation operations such as mini-maze
- Thoracoscopic maze and convergent procedure
- Hybrid ablation for patients with advanced and complex atrial fibrillation
- Minimally invasive valve and coronary operations
