Physicians of ExcellenceCarla Wells, MD is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist in practice for more than 25 years. She trained at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She has been recognized by the American Association of Gynecologic Endoscopists as an outstanding gynecologic laparoscopic surgeon. As well, she is a Da Vinci trained robotic surgeon. She has particular interest in minimally invasive surgery and high-risk obstetrics. “I always strive to practice compassionate and individualized medicine while maintaining the highest level of quality,” says Dr. Wells. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).

Dr. Wells graduated from the University of California, Irvine, where she received degrees in both Biology (Cum Laude) and Chemistry (National Honorary Chemistry Society). She earned her M.D. at St. Louis University, where she graduated Cum Laude and was elected into the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. She also received a scholarship achievement citation from the American Medical Women’s Association.

While doing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the prestigious Barnes Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Wells was awarded Outstanding Resident in Gynecologic Endoscopy by the American Association of Gynecologic Endoscopists. She also received the Wyeth-Ayerst Award.

Dr. Wells has been recognized by the Orange County Medical Association for Physicians of Excellence (POE) in 2020 and 2021, which is awarded to physicians for their services to their profession, lifelong dedication to their patients and commitment to the community they serve.

In addition to performing research in infertility, Dr. Wells co-authored a chapter on obstetrics and gynecology for the Washington Manual of Surgery.

Dr. Wells is active in Martial Arts and has earned her third-degree black belt in Aikido. She enjoys spending time with family, friends, and pets.

Dr. Wells is great! Very professional - considerate, honest, and straight forward. She is willing to take the time to explain procedures and potential risks but also prioritizes your personal comfort and efficiency. I expressed some concerns about blood loss during my surgery and she took the time to explain what could happen and what she and her team could do to mitigate those risks. She performed my surgery and recovery has been great. I saw some reviews who said she lacks bedside manner, and perhaps you may not hit it off with her. But if you want someone who is good at what they do, Dr. Wells is definitely great at her job. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an OBGYN.

Dr. Wells is one of the most knowledgeable, professional, and caring doctors I have ever come across. I feel so fortunate that she delivered both of my children. She is incredibly thorough in everything she does and has always shown true dedication to her patients. Her retirement will be a tremendous loss for the community, as we will be losing one of the best OB-GYNs. Still, I wish her nothing but the very best—she truly deserves the world.

Dr. Wells is truly the best OB! She is very attentive, super knowledgeable and detail oriented. I am currently pregnant with my second and have her again currently as my OB. My experience with her for my daughter was beyond amazing and I did have a c-section as well and my recovery was great. Her priority is your health and the baby and that's what matters most to me. Given Dr. Wells busy schedule, she always comes into the room informed with where you left off from the prior visit and where you are at in your pregnancy. She is always very thorough and knowledgeable. She really puts your health and baby's safety as a priority. She will do extra testing if needed and is truly very caring. Dr. Wells and her nurses always have called me if they had any questions or need to follow up with me. Dr. Wells always takes the time to answer any of our questions at all of our visits. I absolutely love Dr. Wells; she is the best and I am so fortunate to have her as my OB!
