Vaccinations
- Annual Flu Shot: Recommended every year for everyone 6 months and older to help protect against seasonal influenza and reduce the risk of serious illness. Ask your physician or local pharmacy about the best time to get vaccinated each season.
- HPV Vaccine: Recommended for everyone starting at age 11 or 12, up to age 26. For some adults ages 27-45, it may still be beneficial—ask your physician. Prevents most cervical, anal, throat and other HPV-related cancers.
- Hepatitis Vaccines: Hepatitis A and B vaccines are recommended for all, especially those at higher risk, including LGBTQ+ community members.
- Monkeypox Vaccine: Available for those at higher risk or who have been exposed. Discuss with your healthcare physician for eligibility and guidance.
Cancer Screenings
- Cervical Cancer (Pap Smear): Start screening at age 21. If tests are normal, repeat every 3-5 years. More frequent screening if HPV infection is present.
- HPV Testing: Often done with Pap smear. Positive HPV may require annual follow-up.
- Anal Pap Smear (for high-risk groups): Screening recommended for those with a history of HIV, high-risk HPV infection and in the LGBTQ+ community.
- Breast Cancer (mammogram): Begin annual screening at age 40, or earlier for those with higher risk. Consult your physician if you have a family history or other risk factors.
- Prostate Cancer: Screening typically begins at age 45-50. Includes a digital rectal exam and a PSA blood test. Earlier screening for those at higher risk (Black men, family history).
- Colorectal Cancer (Colonoscopy): Start at age 45. If normal, repeat every 10 years. If polyps or risk factors are present, your doctor may have you start sooner and undergo screening more frequently.
- Lung Cancer (Low-Dose CT Screening): Annual lung screenings are recommended for individuals between 50 and 80 years old; smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years; and have a history of smoking (20 pack years or more). Those at higher risk may benefit from starting screening earlier, talk with your physician about what’s right for you.
- Skin Cancer (Skin Exam): Regular checks recommended, especially for those with fair skin, sun exposure or family history. Self-exams and clinical screenings help detect changes early. More frequent screening may be needed for higher-risk individuals.
Other Essential Screenings & Prevention
- HIV & STD Testing: Regular testing for sexually active individuals. Frequency depends on risk level—at least annually, or more often as needed.
- Blood Pressure, Triglycerides & Cholesterol (Lipid Testing): Yearly checks recommended for all adults. A lipid panel measures cholesterol and triglyceride levels to help assess your risk for heart disease and stroke.
- Diabetes Screening: Consider starting at age 35, especially for those with risk factors.
- Advanced Heart Plaque Screening This new screening uses AI-enhanced analysis of a coronary CT angiography scan to interpret images of the heart and detect plaque in the arteries or narrowing that may raise heart attack risk. Ask your physician whether this screening is appropriate for you based on your history and risk factors.
