Healing Chronic and Non-Healing Wounds
Our Wound Healing centers at MemorialCare's Long Beach Medical Center and Saddleback Medical Center offer comprehensive, well-coordinated, quality wound care in Los Angeles County and Orange County, California. If you have a sore or wound that is not significantly better in a month or healed entirely in two months, you should ask your doctor about our Wound Healing centers. Our multidisciplinary teams of dedicated specialists are experienced in managing complex and limb-threatening wounds. The centers use the most up-to-date approaches to heal wounds and remain current with the latest scientific advances in wound care.
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Wound Care
Practicing a multidisciplinary approach, rather than relying on any one service or therapy, the Wound Healing Centers’ physicians and registered nurses perform comprehensive diagnostic evaluations. We then develop an individualized treatment plan incorporating the appropriate services and therapies. These plans are shared with patients’ primary care or referring physicians who remain active members of the wound healing team. Cost-effective care is provided through clinical case management, coordination of care, and effective treatment protocols.
To treat multi-system problems, our support service may include:
- vascular evaluation and treatment
- hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- nutritional therapy
- hydrotherapy
- physical therapy
- inpatient pharmacy
- wound care supplies
MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center
The Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center provides patients with comprehensive care for chronic and non-healing wounds, including disease management, therapies, testing, wound care coping, and other specialized care. Our multidisciplinary care team develops individualized wound care treatment plans for each patient’s unique needs.
Our Wound Healing Program provides comprehensive treatment for non-healing or chronic sores and wounds in an outpatient care setting. Increased age, obesity, heart and vascular disease, cancer treatment and traumatic injury may contribute to chronic wounds. The longer a chronic wound goes untreated, the risk of infection, amputation and other complications greatly increases.
Our experts undergo advanced training required to truly understand and recommend the best treatment options to treat chronic wounds and prescribe the best course of treatment. Our program provides effective treatment of persistent infection, selected problem wounds, necrosis and ischemic conditions, including:
- Acute thermal burn injury
- Acute traumatic ischemia/crush injury/compartment syndrome
- Chronic non-healing wounds, especially where hypoxia is present
- Compromised skin grafts or flaps
- Gas gangrene (clostridial myonecrosis)
- Radiation necrosis of bone or soft tissue
- Refractory osteomyelitis
- Soft tissue infection with tissue necrosis due to anaerobic infections
- Wagner III and greater diabetic foot ulcers
Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Program provides hyperbaric oxygen treatments to adults in Los Angeles and Orange Counties on an inpatient or outpatient basis, seven days a week. Emergency care is available 24/7.
Our expert wound specialists work together to relieve pain and stimulate healing with treatment options specific to each patient’s unique needs. Our physician-led care team provides expert assessment and management of all types of chronic wounds, including those that have resisted healing. Overall outcomes show healing rates over 96% with patients typically healed within 14 weeks.
We’re a state-of-the-art center with six Sechrist monoplace (single person) hyperbaric oxygen chambers including four new, larger model chambers, which allow patients to sit, rather than lie down if they prefer during hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment. Each chamber is constructed using clear plastic material, allowing patients the opportunity to visit with family and friends or watch TV and videos during treatment. Board-certified surgeons, wound specialist physicians and registered nurses certified in wound care oversee all patients treated under the Hyperbaric Oxygen Program.
We have developed an evidence-based Limb Prevention Program for patients at high risk of amputation. A non-healing wound is often an indicator of a serious disease or infection. As these conditions worsen, the state of the affected area deteriorates and may require amputation.
Our Limb Preservation Program provides expert medical treatment for patients at high risk of amputation, both within inpatient and outpatient settings. In this program, participants work with a dedicated wound care team that develops a customized treatment plan for their condition.
Together with patients and their families, they complete the most effective treatments to help patients fight infection and recover from serious wounds and injuries.
Patients have a multi-specialty team with them throughout their healing journey. Our Center’s multi-specialty team is made up of physician experts in a variety of specialties including:
- Hyperbaric Medicine
- Orthopedics
- Plastics
- Podiatry
- Wound Care
Each type of wound requires unique care. Depending on the wound type, the healing process may require a comprehensive care team made up of experts, including urologists, gastroenterologists, emergency medicine specialists, trauma experts, endocrinologists and more.

Your First Visit
When you come in, our specialist will evaluate your wound and general health. They'll review your medical, wound and medication history. A blood test may be involved. You may also need special tests that give us information about blood flow and oxygen flow in the wound area.
Your Healing Program
When your test results are in, we'll create a treatment program based on your special needs. This program will include regular visits to the Advanced Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center to provide treatment, evaluate progress, and make any needed changes. You (or your caregiver) will be given detailed instructions on home care, nutrition, dressing (bandage) changes, and protecting the wound from further injury.
You're a Vital Part of the Program
Much of the success of your treatment depends on you. You must keep your appointments, follow directions carefully and watch your progress closely between visits. At any time you or your family members have questions, our staff is available. In fact, we encourage you to ask questions.
The Advanced Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center works with your personal doctor, just like any other medical specialist. We'll discuss your treatment program with your doctor and keep him or her updated on your progress unless instructed otherwise. Remember, you'll need to keep seeing your doctor for routine medical care.
Most often Medicare and Medicaid reimburse for approved procedures. Many health plans cover treatments at the Advanced Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center, located in Orange County. Your coverage depends on your specific plan. Be sure to bring your insurance cards with you when you visit the center.
