About

*Dr. Cuenca is not currently accepting new HMO patients under 65 years of age.

Dr. Cuenca began his path into the medical field by attending Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. After medical school, he moved to South Bay San Diego where he eventually served as Chief Resident of the Scripps Family Medicine Program. As Chief Resident, not only did Dr. Cuenca continue to fulfill his role as a teacher, but also managed to expand the sports medicine curriculum. He would eventually join Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Oceanside, where he provided care for several years until relocating to MemorialCare Medical Group in Mission Viejo. In addition to his patient care responsibilities, he is also the Medical Director of Ambulatory Quality and Patient Safety.

To me, the most important part of medicine is to master the art of listening to patients. Every patient has a story to tell, and I make it a personal goal for them to tell it in its entirety.

Beyond his normal work duties, Dr. Cuenca has lectured at both local and national conferences on topics of Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Practice Management. He previously served as a board member for the Family Practice Management Journal (FPM), which is a peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Through the AAFP, he has made contributions to educational curriculum planning as a member of the Education Advisory Panel. He has also served as an educator by mentoring pre-med and medical students, as well as resident physicians.

Due to his interest in Sports Medicine, Dr. Cuenca completed a one-year fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences-OPTI/San Diego Sports Medicine and Family Health Center Program. During his fellowship training, Dr. Cuenca served as a team physician for SDSU and the Medical Director for several San Diego events. He formerly served as the head team physician for CSU San Marcos for several years prior to relocating to Orange County.

Aside from being a physician, Dr. Cuenca enjoys running and has participated in several half marathons and Ragnar relay races. He has also earned his third-degree blackbelt in Tang Soo Do, a karate-based Korean martial art, and endeavors to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle and encourages the same for his patients.
