Since 1983, Joanne O’Heany has been a devoted advocate for cancer patients across Orange County. Beginning as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society (ACS) she dedicated herself to offering compassion, resources and support for those navigating their cancer journey.
In 2006, she brought that same commitment to MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center where she established the ACS Resource Information Center within the MemorialCare Cancer Institute. Since then, Joanne’s dedication has been wide-ranging and deeply personal.
She has served on the hospital’s Cancer Committee, co-founded the Cancer Community Advisory Council and formed partnerships with local women’s groups to donate thousands of handmade hats, blankets and comfort items for those undergoing treatment within the Zouras Family Infusion Center and the hospital. Yet of all her accomplishments, Joanne is most proud of the Wig Bank.
“In almost 20 years we’ve given away over 7,000 wigs to patients across Orange County. It doesn’t matter where someone is receiving treatment though — if they come to us, we help them. That’s what makes Orange Coast so special. They treat everyone as family because everyone matters.”

Joanne also continues to lead the “Look Good, Feel Better” program, a 12-step workshop that teaches patients cosmetic and skincare techniques for areas that have been affected by treatment.
“We are one of the only hospitals in the county that still offers this program and have helped over 2,500 patients to date,” Joanne says. “Helping them regain their confidence from the effects of chemotherapy is one of the most powerful ways we can support their healing journey.”
Supporting Joanne through every milestone is her husband, Dr. Terence O’Heany, a retired OBGYN who carries the same passion for helping others. His remarkable medical career spans decades across various hospitals in Toronto, New York and Orange County, where he has been a highly respected physician holding numerous leadership positions. Additionally, Dr. O’Heany was an active leader within Orange County Medical Association, California Medical Association and more.
“Throughout my clinical years I’ve been part of many organizations, but through personal experiences I’ve come to know Orange Coast as the most exceptional hospital,” says Dr. O’Heany. “We believe deeply in the mission and are honored to be part of their journey. It truly is one of the best hospitals I have ever experienced.”
Together, the O’Heanys have not only dedicated their time and talents to this community but also as philanthropic champions for two decades. Their generosity has impacted nearly every corner of the hospital — strengthening cancer and cardiac services, supporting the emergency pavilion and helping advance the latest critical care unit expansion. Their giving reflects how they continually embrace this community with compassion and a steadfast dedication to our mission.
“We’re grateful to play a role in so many patients’ journeys and that Orange Coast Medical Center shares that same vision with us. Because every patient deserves to be reminded of their strength and courage.”

With heartfelt gratitude, we honor the O’Heany family for their unwavering dedication to bringing hope and healing to patients across Orange County.
